Relief!

A month ago I took the Illinois certification test for my General Administrator license.  I've been on pins and needles ever since, waiting to get my results.  Historically, I have been a pretty good standardized test taker, but it's been over twenty years since I last took one.  I was fairly sure I had passed, but there were several questions on the test that I just didn't know the right answer for.

When I think about actually using this piece of paper I've been working toward for the past year, I am torn.  In one way, I think working in a district-level position as a curriculum coordinator or professional development coordinator would be an exciting move for me at this point in my career.  As a classroom teacher for almost 20 years, I've certainly seen my share of educational trends and buzzwords come and go, but I also grew in my professional knowledge and have learned what works for the learners in my classroom.  In my one year as a coach, I've been privileged to work with teachers in my building who want to grow as professionals. Both of these positions have provided me with a foundation on which to build as an administrator.

On the other hand, if I moved into an administrative position, I would be one step farther removed from the classroom.  I'm not sure how I feel about that at this point.

Of course, there's no law saying that I immediately have to seek employment as an administrator as soon as my licensure is complete.  I do, however, have a husband who would like to move to the historic area of Naperville, which would be too far to commute from Northbrook.....

  7. Congrats, Mindi! Naperville? Does your husband know about the Anderson's temptation?

  8. Congratulations! I can relate to your feelings. I earned my Administrator's License 7 years ago, but really wasn't sure I was ready to take that next step. I, too, was worried about being one more step away from the classroom. I actually started my administrative career as a half-time literacy coach and half-time Asst. Principal. It was hard to juggle both roles, but gave me great experiences in instructional leadership as well as more traditional administration. My coaching experiences were extremely valuable as I took the next step in becoming a full-time, head Principal. The role of a principal is changing, with a bigger emphasis on instructional leadership. I love that because it still allows me to work directly with teachers and students in a coaching role, so I still get my "classroom" fix. I was worried about not having close relationships with students, but found that while many of my student relationships are not as deep as they were when I was a teacher, I now have many, many more relationships (650 instead of 30) and they are just as meaningful.... they're just different. I still educate children, I just do it differently (lifeskills, character building, rather than academic). I've rambled a lot now, so back to you: Congratulations and best wishes in wherever your career takes you!

  9. Remember, a decision is never final ... you can always go back, but you never know if it was a good or bad decision if you don't try! Congratulations and good luck!

  10. Woo-hoo! Big decisions to make. Time will tell and it doesn't hurt to look for the opportunities. You'll know if it's right.

  11. Congratulations! I have an administrative license, which I used as an AP for five years. I really love the instructional piece, however, so the coach role feels like a better fit for me. Maybe some day I will try administration again.

  12. Congratulations! That is a great accomplishment. I was a middle school principal for 3 years. It is a challenging job. You do educate children along with teachers, parents and community members. Good luck.
